At Universal Quantum, we aim to make the world a better place by engineering the future of computing. Together, we are creating truly impactful quantum computers. Our machines will be capable of solving problems until now considered impossible, with applications ranging across a broad range of industries, including healthcare, materials and aerospace. We are looking to hire an Experimental Quantum Physicist (m/f/d) with experience calibrating, characterising, and operating experiments for quantum technologies. Passionate about helping create technologies which can change the world? We may be the right place for you so get in touch!

What You’ll Accomplish

Apply previous experience in experimental quantum technologies to operate ion-trap quantum computing hardware.

Develop quantum control protocols for ion shuttling and quantum gates.

Perform calibration, optimisation, and characterisation procedures on quantum computing hardware.

Develop theoretical models and simulations to compare experimental measurements with predicted quantum dynamics.

Work with a multidisciplinary and experienced team of Software Engineers, Electrical Engineers, Physicists and Quantum Engineers.

Assist in developing new concepts and develop new technologies for future products.

The most critical attributes we’ll use to compare candidates

Strong experimental AMO physics experience:

Especially in laser cooling and trapping, and/or quantum control experiments using ion-trap or neutral-atom platforms.

Proven ability to design, build, and improve experiments:

Demonstrated through a strong publication record and/or hands-on experience developing complex experimental systems.

Strong modelling and simulation skills:

Experience using simulations and theoretical models to guide experiments, interpret results, and optimise system performance.

Must-have

PhD in AMO physics or a closely related field; postdoctoral experience is highly desirable.

5+ years of degree-inclusive experience in calibrating, characterising, and operating experiments for quantum technologies.

Experience leading a relevant project in quantum measurement, quantum control, or experimental quantum systems.

Strong hands-on and problem-solving skills across laser systems, optics, microwave and RF control, and high-precision imaging systems.

Collaborative mindset, with the ability to work effectively across physics and engineering teams to solve complex technical problems.

Nice-to-have

Familiarity with surface ion traps and their operation.

Experience with Ytterbium or Barium ion-qubit systems.

Strong Python programming skills, ideally applied to experimental control, data analysis, simulation, or automation.

Please feel encouraged to apply even if you don't match all the requirements of our job description. We would love to receive your application even if you think you're only a partial match.

Competitive salary, equity options, unlimited paid holiday allowance, direct insurance pension with 50% employer contributions, group life insurance, job ticket/Deutschlandticket, supplemental health insurance, personal development budget and a relocation allowance.

We are committed to nurturing diversity and inclusion At Universal Quantum, we’re passionate about working with and for all kinds of minds. We are committed to building an inclusive environment where everyone can thrive, and we hold ourselves accountable through continuous improvement, transparency, and the way we design our hiring and working practices. We welcome team members from all backgrounds and actively work to ensure everyone can flourish.
