About the position
We are looking for an experienced Technical Operations Engineer to join our highly technical group responsible for operating and managing the critical infrastructure within the facilities of our London office. You will help manage the complex systems that support our trading floors, amenity spaces, food service areas and mission-critical environments. It will require hands-on involvement in system operations, maintenance, commissioning and optimisation to ensure 24/7 reliability.
We seek candidates with professional training or equivalent experience in building service engineering, with expertise in electrical, mechanical or building services. While comprehensive knowledge is valuable, we recognise that strengths may vary across disciplines. We encourage you to apply if you can demonstrate strong technical abilities, excellence in execution, sound judgement and a willingness to learn. Our collaborative environment supports professional growth, and we value those who can adapt, harness our firm's collective brainpower and take the lead.
Additional responsibilities of this role will include:
Ensuring mission-critical systems meet the demanding requirements of a high-performance trading environment
Contributing to continuous improvement initiatives while maintaining the highest standards of operational excellence
Leading diverse projects ranging from planned maintenance to system upgrades and emergency responses
Implementing innovative solutions and optimising building automation systems
Managing relationships with external vendors, contractors and consultants
Being part of an on-call rotation for nights and weekends to quickly respond to critical system emergencies
About you
Have 5+ years of experience in mission-critical facility operations (e.g., banking environments, trading floors, data centres, or similar 24/7 environments)
Proficient in building services, including plant infrastructure, HVAC, CRACs, UPSs, generators, fire prevention systems and building management systems
Have a strong technical aptitude with computer systems and a willingness to learn new software and control platforms in an IT-centric environment
Skilled in reviewing construction documents, testing/commissioning scripts and approving RAMs for critical scopes of work
Have a demonstrated ability to troubleshoot field issues independently and make well-reasoned engineering decisions to manage operational risks
Excellent written and verbal communicator; able to explain complex technical issues clearly to diverse audiences
Comfortable working with technical and non-technical colleagues across departments and business areas
Can prioritise tasks effectively and stay organised; can balance assigned work required for constantly evolving environments
Fluent in English

About Jane Street
Jane Street's European postings are all London. It's a proprietary trading firm building its own trading and research infrastructure in OCaml — the interview process is famously technical, and the roles here are engineering, not finance, despite the industry.
