IQM is a global leader in superconducting quantum computing. We design and build full-stack quantum computers and provide both on-premises systems and cloud access to our technology worldwide. Our customers include leading high-performance computing centers, research institutions, universities, and enterprises who rely on IQM’s integrated hardware and software solutions. Today, IQM has over 300 employees across offices in Finland, Germany, France, Spain, Poland, South Korea, Japan, Singapore, Taiwan, and the US.

At IQM, we are pioneering the next generation of quantum computers. Our experimental and theoretical teams work hand-in-hand, allowing us to extract maximum value from our unique, large-scale quantum hardware.

As we continue to grow, we are looking for a Quantum Error Correction Experimentation Engineer to join our QEC team. In this role, you will contribute to the implementation, execution, and analysis of quantum error correction (QEC) experiments on superconducting quantum processors.

Your work will help demonstrate and improve QEC capabilities on real hardware and directly support IQM’s roadmap toward scalable, fault-tolerant quantum computing.

This role combines experimental quantum computing, error modelling, and software development, offering the opportunity to work at the intersection of quantum hardware and software while contributing to key technical decisions that shape the future of our quantum computers.

What will you be doing?

Implement, execute, analyse, and report results of quantum error correction benchmark and demonstration experiments on superconducting quantum processors

Develop features for the Quantum Computer Control Software stack in collaboration with quantum physicists and software engineers

Contribute to the development and evaluation of QEC protocols and decoding approaches for near-term quantum processors

Model and analyse error processes in quantum circuits and hardware experiments

Identify technology stack requirements for QEC experimentation and propose improvements to tools and workflows

Collaborate closely with experimental, theoretical, and software teams to support IQM’s fault-tolerant quantum computing roadmap

Participate in regular team discussions to coordinate experiments, analyse results, and drive progress in QEC development

What skills do you need?

Experience calibrating qubits and QPUs (superconducting preferred), beyond running gate-level workloads on cloud quantum computers

Experience with quantum error correction experiments and data analysis, with familiarity with QEC literature

Software engineering experience in Python, including environment management, testing, documentation, and version control

Understanding of quantum information and QEC theory, including decoding algorithms and lattice-surgery-based approaches

Experience with tools for modelling errors in quantum circuits or physical quantum hardware

Familiarity with digital and analog features of quantum computer control hardware

Experience working with large-scale quantum processor experiments or similarly complex experimental systems

Required skills

Strong verbal and written communication skills in English

Ability to make work reproducible and usable for others through well-structured code and documentation

Ability and willingness to collaborate in a diverse, multidisciplinary team of physicists, engineers, and software developers

Education / Experience

PhD in a relevant discipline is considered a strong plus

Experience in experimental quantum computing research or development is highly beneficial

What can I expect from IQM?

An opportunity to work with a passionate and diverse team on an important mission

A unique opportunity to make a real impact on the future of quantum

Growth and progress in a creative and open start-up environment

About IQM Quantum Computers

IQM builds superconducting quantum computers — the hardware, not a layer over someone else's — from Espoo in Finland, with Munich and Budapest. The open roles are unusually deep: quantum error correction, gate and calibration engineering, chip fabrication, FPGA design and the mechanical engineering that goes around a dilution refrigerator.
