Google's software engineers develop the next-generation technologies that change how billions of users connect, explore, and interact with information and one another. Our products need to handle information at massive scale, and extend well beyond web search. We're looking for engineers who bring fresh ideas from all areas, including information retrieval, distributed computing, large-scale system design, networking and data storage, security, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, UI design and mobile; the list goes on and is growing every day. As a software engineer, you will work on a specific project critical to Google’s needs with opportunities to switch teams and projects as you and our fast-paced business grow and evolve. We need our engineers to be versatile, display leadership qualities and be enthusiastic to take on new problems across the full-stack as we continue to push technology forward.

Gaming represents the single largest category on Android by user engagement, visual complexity, and hardware demand. Games push mobile devices to their absolute limits - demanding sustained frame rates, low latency, bounded memory footprints, and tight thermal management across a diverse hardware ecosystem.

Building on the proven methodology of Android System Health, we are establishing a dedicated Games Performance sub-team. Partnering with the Games Business Unit, leading engine providers (Unity, Unreal Engine, proprietary studio engines), and top publishers globally, we leverage Android's telemetry and profiling systems (Perfetto, AGI, field telemetry) to diagnose root causes, optimize engine runtimes, and build platform capabilities that elevate mobile gaming.

Google's mission is to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful. Our Devices & Services team combines the best of Google AI, Software, and Hardware to create radically helpful experiences for users. We research, design, and develop new technologies and hardware to make our user's interaction with computing faster, seamless, and more powerful. Whether finding new ways to capture and sense the world around us, advancing form factors, or improving interaction methods, the Devices & Services team is making people's lives better through technology.Individual pay is determined by factors including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.

Capture and analyze deep performance traces (e.g., Perfetto, Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) profilers) to diagnose frame pacing anomalies, memory pressure, and thermal throttling in top mobile games.

Develop isolated reproduction benchmarks and automated profiling test harnesses for complex game engine workloads.

Prototype and implement optimizations in native game engine runtimes (e.g., Unity, Unreal) and Android platform subsystems under executive technical guidance.

Partner with Android telemetry and graphics teams to integrate new performance metrics and validate field improvements. Author diagnostic documentation and reproduction playbooks to assist game studios and engine maintainers in debugging performance issues.

Comply with all company health and safety policies, procedures, and legal requirements.

Minimum qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.

1 year of experience with data structures and algorithms.

Preferred qualifications:

Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or a related field or equivalent practical experience.

Experience in software development with C++, C#, Java, or Rust.

Familiarity with game development, game engine runtimes (e.g., Unity, Unreal Engine), or graphics Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) (e.g., Vulkan, OpenGL ES).

Familiarity with performance profiling and tracing tools (e.g., Perfetto, GPU counters, RenderDoc, Linux perf).

Interest in learning mobile graphics pipelines, frame scheduling (e.g., SurfaceFlinger, FrameTimeline), and native memory management.

Strong problem-solving skills and curiosity to investigate complex, multi-threaded native software systems.

About Google

Google runs core product engineering out of London, Dublin, Zurich, Warsaw and Munich — not support functions. Zurich is one of its largest engineering sites anywhere, and Warsaw has grown substantially. The bar is high and the process is long, but these are genuine product teams.
