Software Engineer, Site Reliability Engineering, Colossus SRE

Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) combines software and systems engineering to build and run large-scale, massively distributed, fault-tolerant systems. SRE ensures that Google Cloud's services—both our internally critical and our externally-visible systems—have reliability, uptime appropriate to customer's needs and a fast rate of improvement. Additionally SRE’s will keep an ever-watchful eye on our systems capacity and performance.

Much of our software development focuses on optimizing existing systems, building infrastructure and eliminating work through automation. On the SRE team, you’ll have the opportunity to manage the complex challenges of scale which are unique to Google Cloud, while using your expertise in coding, algorithms, complexity analysis and large-scale system design. As a part of the Colossus SRE, you will be responsible for the low-level filesystems that form the basis of Google's storage systems, one of the largest data storage systems in the world. Your goal is to provide efficient and scalable storage for Google's data, work closely with our dev partners to provide system analysis and design, automation, tooling, and customer consultation to meet these goals.

You will work closely with developers across storage systems up and down the stack including D, Colossus, Namespaces, Chronicle, Blobstore/GCS and others.

Perform Site Reliability Engineering work and projects across the service to improve performance and reliability of the service.

Work with partner Development, SRE and SRE leadership to design and deliver different programs and projects in a scalable, reliable and secure manner.

Serve as a full member of the Colossus SRE on-call rotation, supporting Colossus at global scale and ensuring the very many dependent systems can always deliver.

Drive technical direction of Colossus SRE team.

Shape team culture and goals of the team by bringing your own knowledge and perspective, and by advocating for SRE best practices.

Minimum qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

5 years of experience with software development in one or more programming languages.

3 years of experience in designing, analyzing, and troubleshooting large-scale distributed systems.

2 years of experience leading projects and providing technical leadership.

Preferred qualifications:

Master's degree in Computer Science or Engineering.
