A problem isn’t truly solved until it’s solved for all. That’s why Googlers build products that help create opportunities for everyone, whether down the street or across the globe. As a Technical Program Manager at Google, you’ll use your technical expertise to lead complex, multi-disciplinary projects from start to finish. You’ll work with stakeholders to plan requirements, identify risks, manage project schedules, and communicate clearly with cross-functional partners across the company. You're equally comfortable explaining your team's analyses and recommendations to executives as you are discussing the technical tradeoffs in product development with engineers.

The Compliance, Safety, and Risk Management (CSRM) team is dedicated to operating a safe, secure, and resilient technical infrastructure through a comprehensive EHS program grounded in integrity, partnership, and care.

The Design for Safety role provides strategic leadership and EHS direction to ensure data center products and facility designs prioritize safety across their entire lifecycle from initial design and construction to operation and eventual decommissioning. By driving proactive, upstream safety integration, this role effectively mitigates downstream risks to employees, partners, and the environment.

In this role, you will continuously refine Design for Safety standards and processes while actively identifying program risks and opportunities. You will collaborate closely with key stakeholders across engineering, construction, project management, operations, EHS, and external partners to establish work plans and execute agreed-upon objectives. Ultimately, this role ensures our most innovative technical infrastructure solutions are built from the ground up with safety, resilience, and sustainability at their core.

Individual pay is determined by factors including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.

Act as the subject matter expert to drive EHS direction and integrate Design for Safety principles into new data center products and building designs.

Embed safety considerations early in the design and engineering phases to eliminate or minimize downstream risks across the full infrastructure lifecycle from construction to decommissioning.

Evaluate, update, and improve Design for Safety standards and workflows to keep pace with evolving technologies and organizational needs.

Partner closely with internal teams across engineering, project management, construction, operations, and EHS, as well as external partners, to align on safety goals.

Identify program-level risks and opportunities to develop and execute targeted work plans aligned with broader safety and business objectives. Oversee the safe execution of technical infrastructure programs to safeguard the health, well-being, and environment of employees, partners, and communities.

Minimum qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in a technical field (e.g., Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering), or equivalent practical experience.

2 years of experience in program or project management.

Experience with safety, Design for Safety (DfS), risk management, and risk assessments (e.g., HAZOP, hazard analysis).

Experience designing with electrical or mechanical infrastructure systems (e.g., substations, switchgears, electrical/mechanical yards, compressor pumps) or heavy industrial environments (e.g., data centers, oil refineries).

Experience with relevant building and industrial safety standards (e.g., ANSI, ISO, NFPA, OSHA, ATEX EU Directive).

Preferred qualifications:

2 years of experience managing cross-functional or cross-team projects.

Direct experience in data center infrastructure design, construction, or maintenance operations (or experience as an electrical/mechanical maintenance technician or engineer in heavy industrial settings).

Practical experience evaluating regional EHS regulatory standards/deviations (e.g., EMEA-specific requirements like arc chutes, spacing, or localized noise restrictions).

Track record of evaluating EHS risk and defining safety controls for novel, custom, or first-of-its-kind Research and Development (R&D) technologies without pre-existing regulatory guidelines.

Strong written and verbal communication skills with a demonstrated ability to collaborate across cross-functional engineering, operations, and project management teams.

Google runs core product engineering out of London, Dublin, Zurich, Warsaw and Munich — not support functions. Zurich is one of its largest engineering sites anywhere, and Warsaw has grown substantially. The bar is high and the process is long, but these are genuine product teams.
