About this opportunity:

Our ability to locate sounds in three-dimensional space helps us understand where a speaker is, while visual cues can make interaction with a remote person feel more natural. This thesis will explore how an augmented reality (AR) avatar can represent a remote speaker through facial movements that closely match synthesized speech.

The goal is to develop a method and algorithm for generating an avatar’s facial movements in a real-time AR application. Similar rendering techniques are used in video games, but this project focuses on synchronizing the avatar’s movements with synthesized speech for a remote conversation demonstrator.

The project will take place in Kista during spring or summer 2027. You will work with an experienced research team at Ericsson.

What you will do:

Review avatar facial representations and rendering methods, and select a suitable baseline system.

Implement an improved avatar for a remote speaker, including lip, jaw, and eyelid movements.

Train a compact deep neural network (DNN) to estimate avatar mouth and head movements from an incoming speech signal.

Evaluate the perceived conversation quality of the improved system against a baseline.

The skills you bring:

You are pursuing a master’s degree, preferably in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, or a related field.

Coursework in signal processing and machine learning is essential.

You have good programming skills in MATLAB, C, or Python.

You are proficient in English.
