About this opportunity

Accurate characterization of RF matching networks is essential for validating designs and achieving reliable correlation between measurements and electromagnetic simulations. The current measurement approach relies on soldering semi-rigid coaxial cables directly onto printed circuit boards (PCBs). However, the pigtail soldering process is highly operator-dependent and can introduce significant variability in measurement results due to differences in cable positioning, solder joint geometry, and repeatability.

At the same time, achieving high correlation between measured and simulated RF performance requires detailed electromagnetic models, including accurate representations of passive components and their mounting structures. Building such models manually is time-consuming and limits the efficiency of design validation workflows.

What you will do

The objective of this thesis is to improve the correlation between RF measurements and HFSS simulations of PCB matching networks by:

1. Investigating alternative PCB probing and interconnection techniques that offer improved repeatability compared to soldered semi-rigid cables.

2. Quantifying the impact of different probing approaches on measurement consistency and accuracy.

3. Developing detailed HFSS simulation models of representative matching network structures.

4. Incorporating 3D models of passive components into the simulation environment.

5. Automating the assignment and integration of component models into HFSS to streamline the simulation workflow.

6. Automate the RF matching process.

The skills you bring

• Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, Wireless Communication, or similar.

• Basic understanding of RF measurements and microwave engineering.

• Interest in electromagnetic simulation tools such as Ansys HFSS.

• Experience with scripting or automation (Python is advantageous).
