About Chemify
Chemify is revolutionising chemistry. We are creating a future where the synthesis of previously unimaginable molecules, drugs, and materials is instantly accessible. By combining AI, robotics, and the world’s largest continually expanding database of chemical programs, we are accelerating chemical discovery to improve quality of life and extend the reach of humanity.
Our Chemifarm facility in Glasgow operates a growing fleet of advanced robotic systems that automate synthesis, optimisation, and library generation. This gives our computational scientists something rare: a direct, high-throughput bridge from in silico design to physically synthesised molecules, closing the design–make–test loop at a pace conventional drug discovery organisations cannot match.
Location: Glasgow, UK (on-site)
Travel: Minimal
The Role
We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer to design and develop the mechanical systems that make up our robotic synthesis platform — the fluidic handling, motion assemblies, enclosures, and instrument modules that physically carry out chemistry. You will take designs from concept through detailed CAD, prototyping, and testing into production, working closely with electronics, firmware, and manufacturing engineers.
What sets this role apart is that your designs do not just move — they handle real reagents and run real chemistry, so precision, reliability, and material compatibility matter as much as elegant mechanics.
If designing mechanical systems for a real-world robotic platform sounds like the right shape of job for you, we’d love to welcome you to our team.
Key Responsibilities
Design mechanical assemblies and components — motion systems, fluidics, fixtures, and enclosures — from concept to production.
Produce detailed 3D CAD models, drawings, and tolerance analyses.
Prototype, test, and iterate hardware, validating designs against real-world performance.
Partner with electronics and firmware engineers on integrated electromechanical modules.
Work with manufacturing and supply chain on design-for-manufacture, materials, and component selection.
Contribute to design reviews and the team’s mechanical standards.About You
You are a hands-on mechanical engineer who enjoys taking a design from sketch to working hardware. You sweat the details — tolerances, materials, manufacturability — and you like seeing your parts come together and move in the real world.
We expect you to bring:
Proven experience in mechanical design engineering, ideally for precision electromechanical or robotic hardware.
Strong CAD skills (e.g. SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or similar) and detailed drawing / GD&T experience.
Sound grasp of mechanisms, materials, tolerancing, and design-for-manufacture.
Hands-on prototyping and testing experience.
Close collaboration with electronics, firmware, and manufacturing engineers.Beneficial Skills
Experience with fluidics, pumps, valves, or motion systems.
Exposure to lab instrumentation, robotics, or automation hardware.
Familiarity with manufacturing processes (machining, sheet metal, injection moulding, 3D printing).
FEA or tolerance-stack analysis.
Why Join Chemify?
Impact. The mechanical systems you design are the body of our platform — your work is what physically carries out chemistry in the Chemifarm.
Autonomy. You will own mechanical design across modules and shape how our hardware is built.
Ambition. We are a Series B deep-tech company at the frontier of chemistry, robotics, and AI — with the resources and mandate to design mechanical systems for a platform unlike anything else.
About Chemify
Chemify is turning chemistry into code: molecules described in a programming language and then made by a robotic 'Chemifarm' rather than by hand. Spun out of the University of Glasgow, where the lab and most of the roles still are, on $50m+ of Series B. The postings run from research chemists to software and robotics engineers, which is the unusual part.
