About Us: At Booking.com, data drives our decisions. Technology is at our core. And innovation is everywhere. But our company is more than datasets, lines of code or A/B tests. We’re the thrill of the first night in a new place. The excitement of the next morning. The friends you encounter. The journeys you take. The sights you see. And the memories you make. Through our products, partners and people, we make it easier for everyone to experience the world.
The Role: As Junior Legal Counsel - Product, you will provide practical, timely and commercially focused legal support to Booking.com’s Trips Product teams (Cars, Rides, and Attractions). The Trips verticals are a significant part of Booking.com's strategy to further build the “Connected Trip” and to grow and scale Booking.com’s multi-product offerings to travelers.
You will work closely with Product, Engineering and Data, Commercial, Privacy, Competition and Consumer Law, Compliance and other LPA colleagues to help the business develop and scale products responsibly. You will be embedded in initiatives from early ideation through implementation, helping teams identify legal risks, develop proportionate mitigations and make well-informed decisions.
The role combines day-to-day product legal advice with ownership of defined legal workstreams, scalable guidance and process improvements.
Key responsibilities:
Advise Product teams on product concepts, customer journeys, product requirements, UX designs, copy, pricing, promotions, rankings, personalisation, terms and disclosures.
Identify and assess legal and regulatory risks, including consumer protection, privacy and data use, platform and intermediary regulation, competition, artificial intelligence, safety and relevant local requirements.
Provide clear, concise and options-led advice that balances customer experience, commercial objectives and legal risk.
Independently manage routine and lower-complexity legal matters, with guidance from senior counsel on higher-risk or more complex issues.
Review, draft and update customer-facing terms, disclosures, partner communications, internal guidance and other legal materials.
Support the Initiative Review Process and RAPID decision-making model by gathering information, conducting initial legal triage and risk assessment, coordinating input from relevant LPA specialists, documenting decisions and tracking mitigations.
Act as the legal point of contact for defined product initiatives, attending relevant business meetings, maintaining action trackers and coordinating dependencies through to implementation.
Support the implementation of new legislation, regulatory guidance, enforcement outcomes and agreed legal advice into product processes, controls, customer communications and training.
Develop scalable legal resources, including FAQs, playbooks, decision trees, checklists and training materials, so that teams can self-serve on recurring lower-risk questions.
Help improve ways of working between Product and Legal, including legal intake, workflow tracking, prioritisation, knowledge management and the effective use of tools and AI technology.
Support the management of regulatory enquiries, disputes and consumer litigation matters where required. This may include helping to assess the legal and commercial context, coordinating internal stakeholders, establishing and maintaining information and evidence-gathering processes, preparing chronologies and factual summaries, supporting instructions to and communications with external counsel, tracking actions and deadlines, and helping to implement remediation or settlement-related steps under the guidance of senior lawyers.
From time to time, you may be required to support from a commercial legal perspective; for example, supporting senior legal stakeholders in helping draft and negotiate simple commercial agreements, maintaining the Trips contract template library and modernising our contracting processes in collaboration with the wider LPA department.
Build trusted relationships with business stakeholders and encourage early engagement with Legal.
Skills and experience required:
Law degree and qualification to practise, or equivalent relevant legal experience depending on the hiring market.
Indicative experience level: 1–3 years post-qualification experience, gained in a reputable law firm or in-house.
Experience in an in-house, technology, platform, marketplace, travel or commercial legal environment is desirable.
Exposure to product, consumer protection, commercial, privacy, competition, regulatory or technology law.
Strong legal research, drafting, analytical and organisational skills.
Ability to explain complex legal issues clearly to non-legal stakeholders.
Ability to provide practical advice while recognising when to seek input or escalate.
Comfortable managing multiple priorities, deadlines and changing requirements.
Proactive ownership of matters, with strong attention to detail and follow-through.
Collaborative approach and confidence working with international, multidisciplinary and multicultural teams.
Curiosity about products, technology, artificial intelligence and emerging regulation and keenness to learn about new areas of law.
Willingness to improve processes and develop more efficient, scalable ways of working.
Advising on customer-facing digital products, online marketplaces or platform businesses.
Working with product managers, engineers, designers, data specialists or UX writers.
Experience with consumer-facing pricing, promotions, ranking, personalisation or choice architecture.
Experience supporting regulatory implementation, incident response, disputes or external counsel.
Experience creating legal guidance, training, FAQs or playbooks.
Familiarity with Jira, legal intake processes, workflow tools or AI-enabled legal tools.
Further traits look for:
Alignment with Booking.com’s values (Customer First, Succeed Together, Own It, Learn Forever, Do the Right Thing).
Curiosity, flexibility, and a creative, pragmatic approach to problem-solving.
Confidence with collaboration.
Ability to influence stakeholders at all levels.
Proactivity, resilience, and a drive to deliver results.
Strong judgment with attention to both the big picture and key details.
Courage to take a stance and make tough decisions.
Team-oriented, self-aware, and a good listener.
Agility in prioritizing and meeting deadlines.
Forward-thinking, with a focus on emerging legal and policy issues.
Please note we are prioritising local candidates for this role. Relocations and sponsorship will not be provided.
