As part of Amazon’s Climate Pledge to reach net zero carbon by 2040, AWS is committed to reducing carbon emissions across our infrastructure, and we are seeking a Senior Sustainability Engineer to drive carbon reduction in the design of our Data Centers across our rapidly expanding EMEA portfolio.

As a Senior Sustainability Engineer, you will work closely with the AWS Sustainability team and the Global Design Engineering team to reduce carbon intensity in current and future AWS data centers. You will create mechanisms to identify opportunities for carbon reduction and track their success. Our standard data center solutions are adapted to the many geographies in which we operate and our building materials, structures and equipment are adapted to that local environment, the materials available and the construction techniques and competencies in that market. This provides the potential for specific carbon reduction opportunities on a building by building basis.

About AIS

AWS Infrastructure Services (AIS) owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. In other words, we’re the people who keep the cloud running. We support all AWS data centers and all of the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on. We work on the most challenging problems, with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain — and we’re looking for talented people who want to help.

You’ll join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles. You’ll collaborate with people across AWS to help us deliver the highest standards for safety and security while providing seemingly infinite capacity at the lowest possible cost for our customers. And you’ll experience an inclusive culture that welcomes bold ideas and empowers you to own them to completion.

Key job responsibilities

In this role you will be responsible for:

- Understanding the design and functionality of AWS data centers globally

- Creating and modifying existing mechanisms to track carbon throughout the project life-cycle

- Owning the tracking of carbon for projects within your region -including working directly with our construction team and equipment suppliers to identify opportunities for carbon reduction (with our scale we are able to drive the design of our equipment)

- Identifying project/region specific opportunities to reduce carbon on specific builds

- Propose and develop carbon reduction initiatives to implemented globally across the AWS fleet.

- Owning sustainability certifications for builds in your region as mandated by building permit requirements or AWS policies.

- Supporting our public policy teams in engaging with local authorities on sustainability issues.

- Producing clear and concise documentation such as detailed design specifications, white papers, and reports

- Initiating and driving to completion, sustainability initiatives for our future generations of data center designs.

- Being positive and always offer creative, out of the box solutions

- Having fun and working hard!

A day in the life

As a Senior Sustainability Engineer at Amazon you will work with internal groups including Design Engineering, Construction, Equipment procurement, Contractors procurement, and AWS Sustainability — as well as external groups including material producers, equipment manufacturers, General Contractors, consultants, regulators, and industry consortia.

Amazon has a global presence and up to 25% travel will be expected as part of this role. Projects will be throughout the EMEA region and a degree of international travel and support will be necessary.

About the team

Our engineers have hands-on practical sustainability experience across the project lifecycle — from concept design through construction, commissioning, and handover. You will be relied on as a subject matter expert in embodied carbon, material decarbonization, and sustainability compliance. At Amazon we highly support continued learning opportunities and focus on continued employee development.

The DCE Sustainability team's mission is to advance AWS's goals of net-zero carbon emissions by 2040 and water positive by 2030. We identify the emerging engineering solutions needed to minimize the carbon emissions and water use of our data centers, then work to support their development, scaling, and incorporation into AWS data centers. We are the first point of contact for DCE's partner teams working on sustainability — and we are Senior Leadership's voice on sustainability within the organization.

The broader Data Center Design Engineering team at AWS consists of Architects, Structural, Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, Fire Protection, and Controls Engineers working to design the next generation of data centers. The team is committed to achieving world-class uptime for our customers and strives to develop a fleet of buildings emphasizing security, safety, and efficiency, while finding new ways to meet our growing demand.

A day in the life

Your day will be a dynamic blend of creative problem-solving and technical expertise. You'll collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, translating complex security challenges into elegant, practical design solutions. From drafting intricate security blueprints to evaluating emerging technologies, you'll play a pivotal role in shaping the future of data center protection.

About Amazon

Amazon hires more engineers in Europe than anyone else on this board, across Dublin, London, Berlin, Madrid, Luxembourg and Gdańsk. The breadth is the point: AWS infrastructure, retail systems, devices and logistics are very different jobs under one name, and team quality varies a lot between them. Worth filtering by role rather than browsing.
