AWS Fault Injection Service (FIS) is a fully managed service for running fault injection and chaos engineering experiments on AWS. Customers use FIS to deliberately and safely stress their applications, uncover hidden weaknesses, validate that their monitoring and alarms work, and prove that their systems recover the way they expect, all before a real incident happens. FIS experiments apply controlled faults to targeted resources, guarded by stop conditions that automatically halt an experiment the moment it moves outside safe limits.

We are looking for a Senior Software Development Engineer to own the design and delivery of the fault actions at the core of FIS. You will build the capabilities that safely disrupt production-grade AWS services, such as Amazon EC2, Amazon EKS and Kubernetes workloads, and Amazon ElastiCache, and you will drive the resilience, scalability, and safety of those systems. You will set the technical direction for your team's software, advise senior leadership on architecture and roadmap, and mentor engineers across the team.

Safety is central to this role. A fault that is too broad, or that fires against the wrong resource, can affect real customer workloads, so you will own the authorization, blast-radius controls, and operational rigor that let customers trust FIS to break their systems on purpose. If you enjoy distributed-systems problems where correctness and customer safety matter as much as scale, this is a rare place to work on them.

Key job responsibilities

Own the architecture for one or more FIS fault domains, providing a system-wide view and design guidance, and act as a key influencer on your team's technical strategy and goals.

Design, build, and release software at large scale for AWS customers worldwide, then operate it in production and keep it highly available and durable.

Build new fault actions and target types end to end: API design, authorization, execution logic, automated testing, and documentation, and safely evolve existing ones.

Identify high-impact, hard-to-reverse technical decisions early, and drive the team toward durable solutions rather than short-term workarounds, especially where customer safety and blast radius are at stake.

Raise the operational bar for your team: strong alarms and telemetry, clear runbooks, effective guardrails, and a healthy culture of incident review and continuous improvement.

Partner with the AWS service teams whose faults FIS supports to design integrations and land cross-team deliveries successfully.

Advise your management and senior leadership on technical trade-offs, and contribute to short- and long-term planning.

Actively mentor multiple engineers and champion engineering best practices that others adopt.

A day in the life

A Senior SDE on FIS is an owner of the product, not just of individual components. A typical day combines hands-on building with work that makes the whole team more effective: producing and reviewing designs for complex fault-domain problems, building and operating fault actions across the service, reasoning carefully about authorization and blast radius so an action can never exceed its intended scope, keeping a close watch on operational health, and unblocking and mentoring the engineers around you.

You will join AWS Resilience, working on a service that thousands of AWS customers rely on to make their own systems more reliable.

About Amazon

Amazon hires more engineers in Europe than anyone else on this board, across Dublin, London, Berlin, Madrid, Luxembourg and Gdańsk. The breadth is the point: AWS infrastructure, retail systems, devices and logistics are very different jobs under one name, and team quality varies a lot between them. Worth filtering by role rather than browsing.
